Even Barbie Wore a Girdle in the 50's!

Bet you didn't know that EVEN Barbie who had the fantastic
figure "to die for," wore a girdle.
In the Barbie’s early years — she was introduced in 1959 — you could buy a miniature elastic girdle as an accessory. By the late 20th century, when even Barbie had felt the stirrings of the women’s movement, the girdle was no longer made.

I'm sure even she wears shapewear now : )

1930's Celebrities in Slim Downed Dresses

Bias-Cut Dresses, 1930s, originally uploaded by Gatochy.

"Sleek, bias-cut dresses were worn for evening and formal occasions, and showed every curve, so girdles were used to slim down the hips. A model poses in a dress by Victor Stiebel (above, left), Hollywood actress Myrna Loy (above, centre) shows off the new erogenous zone, the back, and actress Gina Malo, (above, right) wears a bejewelled Empire line gown. Matt Damon a heavyweight in the Informant

With the release of The Informant, Matt Damon became a member of "Celebs who’ve gained weight for movie roles." I have to say, hard to believe they can do it! Tom Hands lost weight for Castaway and in Philadelphia where he played an aids victim; look at Sean Astin who gained weight as a hobbit in the hobbit Trilogy. As far as Damon, it's painful to see him pudgy (especially when he looks so great in the Bourne Movies!) He plays Mark Whitacre and gained 30 pounds by eating and drinking dark beer, Doritos, and Mickey D’s Value Meals—eaten in between meals on the set—as part of his plump-up plan (according to interviews. ) He was suppose to look "doughy." Mission accomplished.... but it's nice to say ... he has lost it all : )

He really is a "cute patootie."

English Rose Presents Broderie Anglaise ... Nylon!

If anyone out there remembers this, I would love to hear from you! I was surprised to learn that women made their own bras from paper patterns or magazine guidelines to make bra and French knicker sets. The fabric they used was sometimes parachute silk, parachute nylon or old satin wedding dresses. Can you believe that???

Here is the Rose Bra & Suspender Belt (1953) which puts some emphasis on the use of new materials such as nylon and contouring the body in a lighter less stiff way.

Undergarments .. Help Look Your Best In Your Wedding Dress

Getting married ... suffice it to say you want to look your best ... and so does your mother and mother-in-law and all those bridesmaids you asked to be in the wedding!

The right dress is key, but what's under the dress is as important as the dress. Your under garments are going to help pull the dress and your look together.

Whether you need to slim down a few sizes or you just want to hide that small (or large) tummy bulge, we suggest reshaping as an excellent solution.

Shapewear has been around for years. It's the new version of
the girdle, but more comfortable and in this case, medical grade. Shapewear, not only pulls the bulges in, but it also helps correct your posture and give you a nice smooth line in your clothes. You can take inches off your waist, enhance your breasts and even decrease your thighs.

Chances are you will have to buy all new under garments for the dress anyway, why not check into the shapewear option? The more support you have in your wedding dress, the better the dress will look which also translates into better pictures and a happier bride and groom.

Upper Part of the Body

Short fitting undergarments that extends to the ribs, pushing the breasts up and reshaping the waist are ideal for a low back dres, sleeveless and tight fitting innerwear that covers the entire torso.

Lower Part of the Body

Undergarments that provides support for your back, lifts your buttocks and totally shapes your hips is the way to go for the lower part of the body. The weight of a wedding dress can add additional stress on your back so you need an undergarment that is durable enough to provide the support you need yet comfortable enough to withstand long hours of wear. (You also want to be able to sit.)

A good bet, is to order your garment when trying on wedding dresses. It will alleviate a lot of stress! Don't wait until the week before the wedding to order your undergarments; you want to be sure they fit well with your dress and any of the alterations made to your dress. It should fit well with your gown and flatter your shape. The most important factor in purchasing your bridal undergarment is comfort. Peace of mind is an essential issue on your wedding day.

Don't forget, you can also change the shape of your body by wearing shapewear on a daily basis. The Body Magic is perfect for reducing the thighs, stomach, butt, waist, etc. Feel free to browse our products page and shop at our online store.

And don't forget ... the most important beauty secret of your big day is one that is free .... your smile!

Wouldn't you like to have this problem???

Innie or Outie?

In the 50's Lucy and Desi slept in twin beds but managed to have "Little Ricky." And in the 60's TV censors just knew that the public couldn’t cope with seeing a grown woman’s belly button; thus, Barbara Eden "I Dream of Jeannie;" had to cover her belly button with putty because in the 60s showing your navel on TV was unheard of. After all, the navel automatically reminds people of sub-navel activities that are best confined to the bedroom with the lights turned off.

Fast forward to Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island who had no problem wearing short shorts and showing off her great legs. but couldn't show her belly button. Which leads to the question in both Jeannie and Mary Ann's case; did they have an an innie or an outie?. Alas, in 1969,Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In went after the belly laughs by exposing the belly button, and the genie was out of the bottle for good.

So, if modesty’s your bag, you’re probably better off with a 1950's inspired high waisted bikini. The next time you’re on a beach, raise your glass to the 50's! Suit's available at Get Go Retro! After all, a little bit of curiousity goes a long way!

Vintage Foundation Wear ... Gloves Included : )

I came across this fabulous picture of 1950's under garments and foundation wear of The Vintage Party Line. Great picture and I love that the gals are wearing gloves (LOL) ... not realistic, but then the 50's were all about glam.

Think about it, today ... don't have to wear garters, our foundation garments are more comfortable and if you want to wear gloves it's up to you.

The one thing that has stayed the same ... women still want to look curvy and attractive.

Check out the panty girdle to the right ...

It also defines your figure and flattens your abdomen.

The garment contains a special strip to control the waist line, to shape the hip, and style the overall feminine figure.

Functions

  • Enhances your buttocks.
  • Defines your hips.
  • Controls the waist line
  • More comfortable than yester years shapewear

Bottom line, even though things change ... people don't. We still want to look good, still want to be healthy ... nothing wrong with that : )
